December 12th, 2013

Happy Thursday! Tomorrow will be the last spelling test for this calendar year and there will be no homework sent home for next week. You are welcome and encouraged as alway to read and practice spelling and math concepts over break.

Next week we will be making gingerbread houses. We have already started collecting milk cartons. We are just in need of prepackaged frosting, graham crackers, and candy decoration.

Next week on Thursday, December 19th, is our roller skating field trip! If you have not yet turned in your permission form, another one has been attached to this newsletter. Remember your child cannot attend the field trip unless the permission form is returned and signed. The cost of the trip is six dollars. We are still looking for some parent chaperones and drivers, so if you are free that day, we’d love you have you join us! Helmets are not provided by the roller rink and are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. If you do not own a bike helmet and would like your child to wear one to the rink, you can go to one of the local fire departments in town (there is one right near Denali by at 122 E. 4th Ave) and have your child fitted with a helmet for free! More information about this program can be found at http://www.anchoragebikehelmets.org/.

Upcoming dates:

  • December 19th, 12:45-3:15pm: Field Trip to Royal Roller Rink.

Remember to turn in your permission form and six dollars!

  • Next week’s snack schedule:

Monday: Kendon

Tuesday: Piper

Wednesday: Evan

Thursday: Pia

Thanks and have a great week!

Thanksgiving Celebration Feast Tomorrow!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Thanksgiving celebration feast! Lunch will be from 12:30 to 1:30pm, we will start in our own classroom, then move through the other classrooms to fill our plates with goodies, and meet in the multipurpose room to eat together. Food can be dropped off with your child in the morning or brought a little bit before 12:30, whichever works best for you. I hope you all can make it and help us celebrate together! After lunch we will be watching a short presentation we put together about what we are thankful for. We've been working hard and we are really excited for tomorrow! Hope to see you then!

November 22, 2013

Happy Friday! We’ve been diving into our state research and learning about the writing process of rough drafts and revisions. Homework menus and spelling word lists are coming home today, but they will not be due for two weeks, on December 2nd, since next week is a short week with Thanksgiving. This will give everyone a little bit longer over the holiday week to do homework and practice their spelling words.

This Wednesday, the 27th, we have our primary Thanksgiving celebration feast from 12:30-1:30 PM. We hope you can join us for lunch and a short reflection on what we are thankful for in the classroom afterwards. We have been working on writing about what we are thankful for and will be sharing our work after the feast. Lunch will be potluck style and families are invited to bring in a main dish, side dish, or dessert. It can be something special to your family, a dish you always have at Thanksgiving, a cultural dish, or anything you want to share with us. I hope you can come and celebrate with us!

Upcoming Dates:

  • Next week’s snack schedule:

Monday: Danielle

Tuesday: Liam A.

Wednesday: Talia

  • Wednesday, November 27th: Thanksgiving Celebration at 12:30pm!

The feast will be potluck style. Families are invited to bring in a main dish, side dish, or dessert. It can be something special to your family, a dish you always have at Thanksgiving, a cultural dish, or anything you want to share with us. The dishes will be divided among the different classrooms and we will visit each classroom to get our food and meet in the multipurpose room for a community building feast! Happy Friday! We are continuing to explore North America this week and will dive into a more in depth look at the United States next week by doing some state research and more maps. In grammar, we have been working on adjectives and how they can be used to add more description to our writing.

This week it has been getting chilly outside and I’ve been shaking some cold hands in the morning! Please make sure your child brings a warm coat, hat, and gloves to school for playing outside.

Please note we have a new allergy to nuts and keep it in mind as you decide on classroom snacks.  Thanks to all of your continual support both in the classroom and outside the classroom, it is greatly appreciated!

October 17, 2013

Happy Thursday! We’ve had a busy, but short week in the classroom. It has been great meeting with everyone and discussing your child’s progress. Homework for this week is going out today and will be due a week from tomorrow. This week’s spelling words are a review of the last five weeks. The chapters listed for GoMath on this quarter’s homework log reflect the chapters the district’s pacing guide for the curriculum.

Our classroom snack supplies are dwindling. If you happen to be in the store, please think of us. We could use more extra snacks and things to serve snack in (small plates, bowls, coffee filters, concession boats, etc.) The snack calendar is also posted on the website on the calendar page. http://www.denalischool.org/room183/calendar/

Ms. Amanda’s and our class will be hosting the face painting booth at the fall carnival coming up on October 25th. We are looking for volunteers, who would be willing to help us paint. There is a sign up form on the bulletin board outside the classroom. The sign up times are for half an hour running from 5:30pm (for set up) through 8:00pm (for clean up). If you have some time during the carnival and want to get artistic, please stop by and sign up to help or send me an email letting me know you’d be interested in helping. Thanks!

Upcoming Dates:

October 10, 2013

Happy Thursday! We’ve been busy in the classroom learning about timelines and making our personal timelines detailing our lives. Yesterday, we went to the museum to learn about the Dena’ina culture and create our own string calendars. We have also been learning about the continents and Pangaea. We have started our language study and are working on nouns and writing in complete sentences. There will not be normal homework and spelling next week, since it is a short week with two half days. The only homework I am giving is to have an enjoyable weekend with your child and have him or her write a letter to me about it. Regular homework folders will go out again next Thursday for the following week. Thanks for all the wonderful snacks that have been coming in and the helpful parent volunteers in our classroom and on our field trips!

Friday, October 4, 2013

Happy Friday! We’ve had another busy week in the classroom. October is a busy month. Parent teacher conferences are coming up on the 16th and 17th. Your scheduled meeting went home today, if you will not be able to make it at that time, please let me know and we can work an alternative time out. I am happy to announce I’ve been working on the classroom website and it will now be updated with classroom news. You can find it at http://www.denalischool.org/room183/. There are also links on there to Spelling City, Lexia reading, and TenMarks math. These are all resources you can use with your child to reinforce skills in spelling, reading, and math. Thanks again all who have taken the time to assist with the classroom, your time is incredibly valuable to us!
